The winner of the 2009 St. Barths Bucket Yacht Race was the 52m (170’6) Sailing Yacht METEOR by Royal Huisman!
S/Y METEOR, a gaff rigged schooner, proved to be a tremendous performer in the stiff, 15 to 20 knot breeze. Amougst the 35 yacht fleet, Captain Dean Maggio did an absolutely fantastic job at the wheel.
On the first day of racing, Maggio handed off the helm to world renowned musician Jimmy Buffett, who did an outstanding job driving most of the first weather leg. METEOR got the gun and finished first on opening day and continued on to win overall.
CNI’s Jeff Beneville (http://www.camperandnicholsons.com/) trimmed the huge mainsail for the first two days of racing, with Wayne Huizenga, Jr. owner of Rybovich Shipyard, and Colin Kiley of Global BSI rigging, making sure each tack and gybe went off without a hitch.
Fellow New York Yacht Club member Sam Byrne did a tremendous job with mainsail trim on the 3rd and final day in the event’s most exciting race.
