History of the America’s Cup

In 1851 – AMERICA – a schooner with a revolutionary appearance appeared in the afternoon mist and was the first yacht to sail past the Royal Yacht stationed in the Solent, between the Isle of Wight and south coast of England. The event took place one historic afternoon while Queen Victoria was following a sailing race. Yacht ‘America’ was representing a young New York Yacht Club and after beating the best British teams at that time, she took the Royal Yacht Squadron’s 100 Pound Cup to the United States; and it took more than 100 years before it would leave New York again.

Not long after America took the victory at the 100 Guinea Cup in 1851, New York Yacht Club Commodore John Cox Stevens and the rest of the owners sold the radical sailing yacht and returned to New York as heroes. They decided to donate the trophy to the New York Yacht Club under a Deed of Gift, which stated that it was to be “a perpetual challenge cup for friendly competition between nations”. This gave birth to the famous ‘America’s Cup, that has taken its name after the winning schooner ‘America’ and not the country as many of us would think.

One very interesting fact is, that in the more than 150 years of America’s Cup existence, only four nations have won the cup.
