This year the ‘Day of Urk’, organized every Whit Saturday as a dedication towards the extraordinary heritage of the former fishing village, marked the triumphant re-launch of Golden Lion.

Golden Lion, a 70m superyacht, benefited from a detailed renovation at Balk Shipyard in the Netherlands. This three-masted topsail schooner, which was given a flawless profile owing to the refit, was actually constructed in 1937. It was later claimed to have many features similar to a classic boat used by the Danish royal family.

The experts at Balk Shipyard ensured that all the details, making the yacht look elegant, were reincorporated. This seemed to be quite a simple task for these professionals who are skilled at integrating the past, present and future in unique styles and designs.

The Balk facility undertook all the refit activities of metalwork and the detailed technical work so that Golden Lion meets the current specifications and EU directive 98/18 standards for passenger ships. It is for this excellent performance of the Balk craftsmen that the owners assigned them the task of revamping the superyacht after finding it in Denmark in 2007.

The existing owners of the yacht have also traversed aboard two highly acclaimed three-mast schooners, Swaensborgh and Hendrika Bartelds. However, the owners now have the newly renovated Golden Lion, which boasts of the best aesthetics, equipment and technology at their service. This sailing yacht will act as a sail as well as training vessel alongside a day sail vessel for up to 200 guests.
