BMT Nigel Gee, based in Southampton, UK, is one of the world’s largest independent design consultancies offering a vast portfolio of services for advanced and specialised ships and boats, from initial concept to detailed design. They support designers and stylists from the conceptual design stages with naval architecture, concept engineering and proof of concept feasibility studies through to detailed design and shipyard support.
Pictured is the BMT Nigel Gee high speed Pentamaran superyacht concept aimed at the large yacht market. Developed for high speed applications, the patented Pentamaran hull form is a derivative of the stabilized monohull concept featuring a long slender central hull, hydrodynamically optimized without the constraints of needing to be stable as stability is provided by two pairs of outriggers or ‘sponsons’. Project yacht Veloce an innovative application of technology in the large yacht market and is based on a 130m platform capable of over 40 knots. The beam of 30m offers significantly more internal area than on an equivalently sized monohull leading to exceptional internal spaces with true flexibility in configuration of the layout.
The BMT group collaborates with the world’s leading designers, stylists and shipyards to provide first class engineering for the yacht market
The modern yacht demands a rigorous and thorough input of engineering technology from the
earliest design stage. We are able to support designers and stylists from the conceptual design
stages with naval architecture, concept engineering and proof of concept feasibility studies
through to detailed design and shipyard support.
Our company has an outstanding reputation in hull-form design and development and our
far-reaching skills and experience result in vessels that offer good sea-keeping ability, low
resistance, high propulsive efficiency and exceptional range. Additionally our background in
configuring conventional, unusual and high-tech propulsion systems coupled with the integration
of stabilisation and dynamic positioning systems allows us to provide high level capability for
the most demanding of yacht owners.
With an intimate knowledge in the design of steel, aluminium and composite structures
combined with state of the art computational software we have been responsible for some of
the world’s most advanced marine structures and can offer designs for the most challenging of
yacht structures.
The team of mechanical engineers have the tools and experience to design the most efficient
and quiet onboard machinery and systems that operate to exacting specifications.
The design services we offer are encompassed in the following disciplines:
• Hull-form Design and Development • Weight Engineering
• Hydrodynamic Model Testing • Specification Writing
• Aerodynamic Wind Tunnel Testing • Concept Design Development
• Sea-keeping Analysis • Class Level Design Packages
• Computational Fluid Dynamics • Design by Direct Calculation
• Performance Predictions • Machinery Layout
• Manoeuvring Predictions • Propulsion System Design
• Stability Analysis • Mechanical system design
Integrated with extensive detailed engineering capability and our comprehensive knowledge of
the modern regulatory framework gives us the ability to design, engineer and assist at all stages
of the design and build process to deliver yachts which perform flawlessly when at sea in the
hands of the owner.
