In ideal conditions off Valencia, Spain, the BMW ORACLE Trimaran with her revolutionary wing sail sailed away from the more conventional ALINGHI 5 Catamaran and drew first blood in the first race of the 2010 33rd Americas Cup.

After an incident filled start, with Ernesto Bertarelli suffering a penalty and James Spithill then stalling the Oracle yacht in the pre start maneuvers the sailing race got underway in earnest with a drag race for 20 kilometers upwind.

Alinghi sailed away over 660 meters ahead before Oracle could even start. However, once the race off Valencia began the Americans showed their superior speed and the Tri-maran was faster both upwind and downwind with the huge winged main sail technology.

BMW Oracle wins the first race in the 33rd America’s Cup! Oracle is the winner today. Larry Ellison and Russel Coutts, owner and director from the American Oracle team, will be very satisfied with Firday’s sailing.

The winning margin between the racing multihull yachts was over 15 minutes at the finish, however around 10 mins of this time can be attributed to an incorrect penalty turn by Alinghi which needed to be done again.

The next race on Sunday will be interesting as it is now match point to the Americans – one more win and the Americas Cup will return after many years back to America.
