The Dubois Cup 2009 Sailing Yacht Regatta Results:
The second ever Dubois Cup 2009, the first being in 2007, was a very successful superyacht regatta. From 6-8 June the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, the Porto Cervo Sardinia Marina, played host to an exclusive rally of four beautiful Dubois sailing yacht – each and every one a testament to the talents of Ed Dubois and the Dubois Naval Architects team.
The Dubois sailing yachts which took part ranging from 36 to 52 meters in length, were Kokomo, Ganesha, Moonbird, Nashira II, and Sovereign.
On corrected time, sailing yacht Moonbird, a 37 meter sloop, won the 25 mile race on day one and S/Y Kokomo took the line honours.
A steady 15 knot westerly breeze was ideal for day one. The superyachts left from Porto Cervo sailing upwind through the strait between Capo Ferro and the Isola della Bisce before rounding the Secca Tre Monti rock and heading north to Monaci island before turning and passing Porto Cervo before rounding the tiny islet of Mortoriotto and heading for the finish line positioned in the Gulf of Pevero.
Sailing in a seven knot westerly breeze the Dubois yachts raced south of Porto Cervo on day two to the islands of Mortoriotto and Mortorio before returning north to the finish off the Gulf of Pevero.
Sailing yacht Ganesha claimed the Dubois Cup 2009 finishing first on corrected time on day two.
S/Y Ganesha was followed by sailing yachts Moonbird and the beautiful Kokomo – owner by Australian Lang Walker – which took line honours on day while coming third on handicap.
The grand scale of superyacht dimensions drew crowds of onlookers at Porto Cervo Marina. With six yachts moored togather the similar design accents of the Dubois was on show. The superyachts ranged from 36 to 52 meters long and with masts of up to 63 meters high – quite a spectacle.
The Dubois race event was a fundraising regatta and the proceeds went to the children’s medical research charity called Sparks. Sparks helps families threatened by childrens’ diseases.
In addition, the sailing event also raised awareness for ‘George’s Appeal’, an entity which strives to raise awarness and find a cure for Neuroblastoma which is a deadly child cancer.
Naval Architect and designer Ed Dubois commented at the close of the event: “ “The second Dubois Cup was held in 2009 at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, probably the best yacht club in the world,” We’ve enjoyed beautiful weather, perfect organization and a wonderful family atmosphere. It has been the perfect backdrop really for the charity we are supporting. I look forward to seeing everyone back in the same venue for 2011.”
