Environment friendly yachts are here to stay. With the rise in global awareness towards environmental issues and global warming, yacht industry is also contributing in its own way to mitigate the problems related to marine pollution.

It is said that the marine industry is the greatest contributer of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, with a single ship emitting smoke equivalent to few hundred cars. Pertaining to this problem, yacht makers are now moving towards alternative propulsion techniques in order to reduce the carbon dioxide content in the exhaust.

One such step has been taken by RM shipyard of La Rochelle by producing the world’s first hydrogen power yacht with a fully integrated laboratory to study pollution in the Mediterranean sea
.
The hydrogen powered yacht, Zero CO2 is a 12 meter yacht equipped with a electric motor driven by a hydrogen fuel cell developed by CEA Liten of Grenoble.

The main objective of Zero CO2 is to sail around the Mediterranean using a carbon free propulsion system. The scientific laboratory platform has been installed on the yacht by the University Joseph Fourier (UJF). The laboratory will collect data and create a profile of the marine pollution in the Mediterranean. Moreover, it will also try to carry out research for the possibility of producing “green hydrogen” with the help of solar panels and wind turbines installed on the yacht.

Thus, the main objectives of Zero CO2 will be:

To demonstrate and set an example for the future yachts to follow an environment friendly propulsion system.Zero CO2 will power an RM 1200 with the help of hydrogen fuel cell.

It will obtain data from ocean as well as th atmosphere, in order to evaluate marine pollution caused mainly because of fossil fuels

It will also be helpful, in order to raise awareness amidst professional and amateur sailors towards climate change and marine pollution by stating the importance of using alternative energy resources.

The yacht will commence its first journey in March 2010.
