Welcome to the world of futuristic green yachting. With the current trend of environmentally friendly yacht designs speedily catching up with the designers, the yacht industry has seen a tremendous influx of new “Green Yachts” entering the market. Moreover, the rising awareness of the yacht industry towards the present problems of global warming and carbon emission has also contributed equally to the uptake of the new trend.

However, the new concept boat Volitan tops the list of the “Greenest Yachts”. Volitan is a name derived from a word that means “flying fish”. Light weight and futuristic, Volitan in fact looks like a boat which would soon take off, especially when her sails are down. Also, with its solid sails and equipments, harnessing wind and solar energy, Volitan is one of the very few vessels, which are hundred percent green.

All the onboard systems of the yacht are controlled and optimized by a networked computer. When the vessel is sailing, wind and solar energy are harnessed and stored in a series of batteries, which can supply enough power for days and nights together.

Though the construction of the boat is such that it can easily be affected by rough wind and weather conditions, special steps have been taken to prevent this. Dynamic stability is the key to wing design for the boat and is also its weak point during adverse weather conditions. To compensate this, the boat’s wings track the sun and wind for optimal power by folding up against the boat. The wings are engineered to operate even at the speed of 60 knots.

The wings move with the help of DC motors attached at the sides of the boat in order to support the moving solar wings performance and also the overall stability. This arrangement also ensures that the navigational performance is maximized. Maneuvering is also made easier with the help of two additional stabilizer wings fixed exactly beneath each of the wings. When not in use, the sails can be retracted and tucked away neatly.
