Motor Yacht BIG FISH is the current project underway at McMullen & Wing Ltd, New Zealand. A striking contemporary design she is already catching the eye of passers-by. With most of the hull and superstructure complete we thought we’d bring you up to date.

This custom design from Gregory C. Marshall Naval Architects is a 45m large volume steel and aluminum explorer motor yacht engineered for remote operation throughout the Pacific.
With a 10,000 mile range at 9-10 knots and extensive long term storage onboard she is a unique class of vessel capable of sustaining extended trips for up to three months away from
refueling facilities. As well as having massive fuel storage capacity, fuel efficiency is a key element of her cruising capability. Quantified through extensive water-tank testing her hull shape and plum bow make her super-efficient at moving around the ocean, and this integral efficiency is complimented by concepts such as reduced power consumption by extensive use
of LED lighting throughout the vessel, saving on power generation requirements.

First impressions are of a bold and edgy long range expedition yacht; strong lines and streamlined surfaces coupled with her plum bow and expansive foredeck give this vessel a
very masculine ‘no-nonsense’ persona. An abundance of glass meets you on every deck, and the angular radar mast with control pod seems very much to be the dorsal fin of this big fish.
Take a second glance and you start to take in some of the attributes that make this motor yacht just so interesting. Significant technical design allows the aft bulwarks to be folded out to combine with the swim platform creating a 46ft wide ‘beach’ around the aft deck. Infused stone replaces traditional teak over much of the deck area, and extendable platforms amidships provide unprecedented floor to ceiling views from inside the dining salon.

While the large sundeck displays obvious opportunities for alfresco dining and sun-bathing, and the pod (crows nest) provides superb sightseeing or navigation advantage within the Pacific island reefs. The unfurnished foredeck hides something a little different; hydraulic rams lift the deck vertically to reveal a 27ft aluminum diesel jet tender safely stowed for trans-ocean passage making. This tender provides superb transport to dive sites and for exploration trips while BIG FISH is moored at one of her remote anchorages.

The interior for BIG FISH is being constructed modularly and is already well underway, but with just under a year of construction to go we will save some for later … catch us mid year and indulge a little more.
