Seatec 2011, the ninth International Exhibition of technology, subcontracting and design for boats, mega yachts and ships, due to be held at Carrara Fiere from 16 to 18 February 2011, has announced the following competitions:

• MYDA – Millennium Yacht Design Award 8th year
• TARGA BONETTO 17th year

The 8th MYDA, as always open to established professionals as well as new professionals, has selected the theme ‘New Projects’ for section A and ‘DREAM BOAT’ for section B: a one-off project, outside the realms of what is currently accepted – complete freedom of expression – a personal conceptual and formal invention. Not an impossible dream, rather a daring vision for the future. A fascinating challenge for entrants.

The 17th TARGA BONETTO, in the TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION section, has the theme of: “Medium-sized Boats” (maximum size of sailing boats 55′, motor boats 50′), open or liveable. The design and study of a prototype, one-off, with avant-garde technical-aesthetic features that aiming at low cost production, may subsequently be developed, either partially or entirely, in the serial production of boat (sailing or motor boats) of the given size. The INFRASTRUCTURES section is for the renovation of an existing pleasure port using the Port of Santa Margherita Ligure(GE) as a reference.

The 5th year of Abitare la Barca offers the opportunity for students to work “live” during the SEATEC fair in a special area on an innovative version of the typical small Mediterranean fishing boat known as the ‘gozzo’ as per the theme: Open boats – maximum length 7 metres – primarily with oars with the option of an engine – on board or outboard – and minimum auxiliary sailing equipment, that reinterprets with new ideas the classical features of the Mediterranean shipyard traditional boats, that is the small fishing boats. Their use may range from pleasure fishing to complementary facilities at bathing establishments. Particular attention should be paid to the lightness, versatility, low management costs, safety and reliability that small versatile boats should have.

Every year these competitions record a large number of international entrants including students, fresh graduates and professionals. In the 2010 MYDA the practice WOJCIECH WESOLEK DESIGN in Podwale, Poland was awarded a special mention. In Abitare la Barca 2010, a student from the UK, Coventry University faculty of Art and design (who won first prize in the competition: the design of a Megayacht, held in 2009 by the British Marine Federation in London) took part in the “live” competition together with 14 other students from Italian universities and design schools.
