NACOS (Navigation Automation Control System), a Platinum Series of next-generation navigation, automation and control systems has been launched by SAM electronics, an L-3 Communications company. Made by a joint collaboration of SAM Electronics, Lyngsø Marine of Denmark and L-3 Valmarine of Norway, the new innovative series provides monitoring and controlling features for all types and sizes of ships.

Located in Hamburg, Germany, SAM Electronics, a division of the L-3 Marine & Power Systems, employs over 1,300 people worldwide and is a turnkey supplier of complete electrical systems. SAM Electronics is also a leading supplier of integrated navigation, automation, communication, energy distribution and propulsion systems for all kind of ship types.

Headquartered in New York City, L-3 Communications employs over 66,000 people world-wide and is a prime contractor in aircraft modernization and maintenance, C3ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) systems and government services. L-3 is also a leading provider of high technology products, subsystems and systems. The company reported 2008 sales of $14.9 billion.

The whole Platinum series is based on identical components and utilize a common network supporting the complete portfolio of Radarpilot, Ecdispilot, Trackpilot, Conning displays as well as the Alarm, Monitoring and Control System, Propulsion Control, Power Management Systems and more. The perfect combination of networked architecture and use of modular components ensures unprecedented levels of system scalability. Based on the new platform, solutions can range from a small alarm system or a stand-alone ECDIS, up to very large and complex configurations for highly advanced ships. Moreover, any system from the series can be easily expanded, upgraded or modified to provide increased functionality. The versatility of the NACOS Platinum Series is illustrated by the new IP-radar, which by direct connection to the ship’s IP network enables the complete radar image to be accessible from any workstation. Similarly, the ECDIS display can be made available for viewing in an engine control room, in the Captain’s office, or in public rooms of the ship.

Also, a key concept of the NACOS Platinum Series products is that all products are developed according to User Centered Design principles. Building on SAM Electronics’ 50-years of expertise, and that of leading international Human Factors institute, a very ambitious collaborative design process has been undertaken resulting in a Human Machine Interface (HMI) which is intuitive, transparent and completely consistent across the full range of products. Thus, the result is a system which is efficient and satisfactory to use and by providing unrivaled overview and simplicity of operation, the system enables the crew to concentrate on operating the ship safely without any undue distraction or stress.

Apart from these, other main advantages of the NACOS Platinum Series, with its system-wide use of standardized hardware and software components, include significantly improved quality and reliability of systems. Similarly, maintenance requirements are greatly simplified with a much-reduced need for spare parts, while continuity of operation is assured by extensive self-monitoring facilities supported by online diagnostics.

The NACOS Platinum Series products will be on display for the first time at the SAM Electronics’ stand at Europort in Rotterdam from November 3-6, 2009.
