Palmer Johnson yachts have sailed forward in leaps and bounds in recent years. Many in the know were very impressed by the superyacht company’s new large performance motor yachts, such as HOKULANI, that Palmer began producing over recent years. The design concept of these successful Palmer Johnson yacht has been created by up and coming Italian designers Nuvolari-Lenard. The Palmer Johnson and Nuvolari-Lenard combination has produced some fantastic and inspirational yachts which have been well considered and crafted.

It is perhaps, therefore, not surprising to some that Palmer Johnson now unveil their plans to build bigger and better motor yacht at a time when yacht size is growing.

Accordingly, Palmer Johnson has now introduced a 82 meter Ice Class superyacht design – Palmer Johnson World – a new design concept which combines the ability to cruise in remote destinations with exceptional sea keeping capabilities, in a variety of demanding conditions, otherwise know as an expedition style yacht. Of course the private yacht luxury and elegance of the highest level will remain available to guests in this large and impressive expedition style superyacht. The new yacht is the Palmer Johnson World superyacht.

Italian designers Nuvolari and Lenard have created a concept for the six deck interior and exterior living areas that is to a high level of comfort and luxury – the Palmer Johnson World superyacht.

The luxury motor yacht contemporary emphasis on a healthy and balanced active living and as such there is the ample use of large open spaces and extensive panoramic sea views.

For instance, the owner’s ‘cabin’ has been expanded past the ‘owner’s’ suit concept to become an owners ‘apartment’ and it takes in 3 levels being situated on the fourth, fifth and sixth decks. The apartment includes a bedroom suite, a walk in dressing room, separate business and private lounges, an office and a private Jacuzzi pool sundeck which will incorporate with 360 degree views of the location the motor yacht is visiting.

Indeed Palmer Johnson World is a concept that incorporates the latest Rolls Royce design competence in offshore technology to ensure peak performance, endurance, reliability, lower costs and maintenance efficiency.

Palmer Johnson Norway has acquired the Norwegian shipyard Flekkefjord Slipp Maskinfabrikk’s which is known for building complex seismic, research and exploration vessels. Palmer Johnson Norway has optimised the Rolls Royce UT hull for an eco and fuel friendly Diesel-Electric Azipull Propulsion system.

Palmer Johnson note that the Diesel Electric Propulsion system not only contributes towards the DNV ‘Clean Class’ status, but also allows for greater operational flexibility. The diesel electric propulsion is designed to reduce certain inefficiencies associated with diesel propulsion such as reducing vibration and noise levels, the loss of speed in head seas, improve the yacht’s maneuverability and control. All of this further contributes to the superyacht’s ‘Clean Class’ notification.

Various improvements in the motor yacht’s propulsion efficiency will in turn act to reduce the total of level of power system installed. This reduces both the running costs and the emission of harmful gases into the environment.

The luxury motor yacht can cruise at full speed on the main diesel engines without requiring generators. Due to the electric propulsion the yacht has flexibility in power use and can also sail at 13 knots on one main engine or at 6 knots on one auxiliary generator set. Also, she can operate on any combination of main engines and auxiliaries to match the load and speed at any given time thereby offering optimum controllability.

The motor yacht also had the ability to moor in environmentally sensitive or restricted areas as she will have station-keeping capabilities using Dynamic Positioning. She will not require the traditional use of lines or anchors damaging the environment because the onboard propulsion system and thrusters can work together to control the position by centralized automatic responding to variations in sea conditions.

Further design highlights include a certified helicopter deck, a heli hangar, an (optional) garage which can house a six man Discovery submarine and a Rolls Royce at rest stabilisation system. With security being a consideration for many superyacht owners and the Palmer Johnson motor yacht design concept incorporates forward scanning sonar, water cannons, closed circuit television, thermal imaging, acoustic shields and any other technology an owner wishes.

One of the Palmer Johnson World superyacht’s most eye catching designs is the large aft each house which looks forward onto an outdoor swimming pool deck. The leisure facilities for guests also include a fully equipped gym, spa with Hammam, sauna with treatment room, cinema, piano foyer and infirmary. One should also mention features like the novel aft beach house, which looks forward onto an outdoor swimming pool.

Another contemporary yacht design theme which is also key aspect of this motor yacht is the clear separation of crew and guest accommodation and living areas. A maximum crew of 27 can be spread amongst single, double and triple berth cabins and the living areas for staff comprise a separate galley, two mess lounges and a dedicated gymnasium. Palmer Johnson also acknowledges the special attention was given to provisioning of the vessel along with generous dry, refrigerated and frozen storage.
