Sparkman & Stephens designs modern classic sailing yachts in the 41m Super J / 130 Spirit of Tradition Sloop.
The Sparkman & Stephens 41.2m J-class Super J:
Sailing yacht Super J is a new Sparkman & Stephens new 41.2m J-class sloop yacht design. This new yacht design is modelled on the Original J-class from the 1930s – a collaboration between W. Starling Burgess and Sparkman & Stephens.
The modern J class superyacht has the following specifications: 6.4m beam, 4.57m draft, displacement 180 tonnes.
Back in the 1937 America’s Cup the original S&S J-Class sailing yacht Ranger was defeated the English Endeavor II in four consecutive races making a ever lasting proud moment in the history of Sparkman & Stephens yachts.
The sailing superyacht’s hull lines and dimensions came from the original one where the original yacht was studied and applied to the design of the new Super J.
The Super J design employs cold molded wood construction on the hull and deck, fastened to stainless steel frames.
Modern, lightweight systems and lightweight joinery allow ballast to be maximized, yielding the best sailing performance for the yacht. In addition to accommodation for eight crew members,
Sailing yacht Super J has a full beam owner’s stateroom aft, one ensuite guest stateroom and two additional guest cabins providing comfortable accommodation for eight guests, and also features an open bar area leading into the main saloon.
Being a new yacht she will be equipped with modern features but Sparkman & Stephens report that worked to maintain many of the traditional aspects of the design. The original low-profile deckhouse has been maintained resulting in a clean, unobstructed working deck.
All high-modulus carbon spars, sixteen hydraulic winches, four coffee grinder pedestals, and a hydraulic mains sheet traveller allow her to be raced competitively against any modern yacht. The traditional deckhouse, helm pedestal, and twenty stainless steel Dorade vents remain in an effort to maintain a traditional feel.
The Sparkman & Stephens 130’ Spirit of Tradition Sloop:
The team at Sparkman & Stephens has also designed a new 130’ Spirit of Tradition Sloop. Designed for an experienced yachtsman the superyacht will boast a modern and light displacement hull as combined with advanced and contemporary sail handling and mechanical systems.
These two features conspire to create a new design which is truly state of the art as well as beautiful. Advanced in every way her elegant styling adds to traditional sentiments and aesthetically pleasing shapes and classic Sparkman & Stephens detailing are on display.
The yacht’s functional aft cockpit provides plenty of working space for the helmsman and trimmers and a roomy lounging forward cockpit gives comfort for guests as well as a desirable unobstructed panoramic view over the low profile cabin house.
The superyacht’s decks are roomy, clean, clutter free, and have all sheets and halyards running below decks.
Down below in her interior she has traditional S&S deck styling and furnishings, such as varnished butterfly and companionway hatches, varnished wooden Dorade boxes with polished cowls, and miscellaneous sailing hardware.
A grand staircase leads into the main salon and dining area and traditional woodworking and trim details are a feature.
The sailing yachts’ main dining area seats eight guests comfortably. Three en suite staterooms situated aft accommodate six guests comfortably and the cabins are well appointed with queen berths outboard, private heads, and separate showers.
The yacht’s full beam master stateroom features a walk in closet, large head with double sinks, oversized separate shower, king sized berth to port, plush settee to starboard, and a private aft companionway.
Forward of the main salon, a full beam galley is furnished with ample cold storage, 36” chef’s range, bar serving area and all other modern appliances a well-equipped galley requires.
