Summit teak comes from a tropical deciduous forest tree native to Southeast Asia. The teakwood
tree, a member of the Vervain family of Verbanaceae (Tectona grandis), is plantation-grown on the
Indonesian island of Java.
The wood is highly valued because of its beautiful grain and color and is preferred in shipbuilding
and furniture making. Teak is strong and durable, almost immune to decay and contains an oil that
is resistant to insects. The teakwood tree grows to 150 ft (46m) in height and is 3 to 8 ft (0.9 to
2.4m) in diameter at the base. The leaves are among the largest in the world, 2 ft (.61m) long and
1.5 ft (.46m) wide. They yield a purple dye and are used for thatching and wrapping. Teakwood
leaves are so rough to the touch that they are used for sandpaper in Asia. This tree also has tiny
white flowers that grow in clusters and a small fruit the size of a cherry that contains oily seeds.
Since 1987, Summit products have been manufactured from plantation-grown teak.

When you purchase Summit furniture, you purchase the finest plantation teak available and the
choice of shipbuilders and master furniture makers for centuries. To keep your Summit furniture
looking its best, we suggest the following easy care guidelines:
N A T U R A L T E A K
R E G U L A R C L E A N I N G : With time, your teak will turn from its original golden brown
color to a silvery gray patina. During this transition period, you may notice a “moiré” effect
caused by the oils in the wood coming to the surface and mixing with moisture (fog, dew). This
is a normal stage the teak goes through as it star ts to weather and can easily be washed off with
soapy water. As with anything left outdoors, your furniture will be subject to airborne impurities
such as pollens and dir t. Frequent hosing of your furniture will help it stay clean and weather
evenly. Teak loves water!
D E E P C L E A N I N G : If your furniture has become excessively soiled or weathered, clean
with a medium stiff bristle brush or gently powerwash. For stains and discolorations that water
alone does not remove, we recommend Semco teak cleaner.
S A N D I N G : If desired, any roughness can be removed quickly and easily by light sanding.
Depending on the roughness of the wood or the desired smoothness, use anywhere from 100-
400 grit sandpaper. Sanding can also remove most surface abrasions on natural, unfinished teak.

Semco teak sealer treatment inhibits the sun’s ultra-violet rays from “aging” the natural teak
wood. The golden brown color of the natural teak will be preserved by periodic reapplication of
teak sealer. The following steps will help keep your teak sealed furniture in prime condition:
R E G U L A R C L E A N I N G : As with natural teak, frequent hosing will help keep airborne
impurities off your furniture. Stubborn stains may be sponged off with soap and water. Spot
application of sealer may be required.
R E A P P L I C A T I O N O F T E A K S E A L E R : With time, the teak sealer treatment
applied at our warehouse will wear away. Depending on your par ticular environment and use,
this can be anywhere from 6 months to a year, or longer. To reapply the teak sealer, first
thoroughly clean your furniture. The furniture should be completely dry before reapplying the
teak sealer treatment. One gallon of teak sealer is enough to treat 8-10 pieces of furniture.
To order Semco Teak Products, call 800.662.0223. Request sealer color “natural.”

For routine cleaning and maintenance we recommend using a stainless steel or brass cleaner,
as applicable. Follow the manufacturers’ instructions, taking care not to get any of the cleaner on
the teak as it may discolor it.

The combination of Summit’s core construction and solution-dyed acrylic fabrics makes our
cushions and pillows ideal for outdoor use. To prolong the life and look of your cushions, store
them in a dry area when not in use. If your cushions and pillows do get wet, unzip them and
stand them on end to facilitate drying.
Please contact your showroom representative with any questions regarding maintenance. With
moderate care your Summit furniture will stay beautiful for many years to come.
