The Australian 2010 Audi Hamilton Island Race Week is to now include a division for superyachts. This may also include Kokomo III the 58 m superyacht – GA pictured.

Audi Hamilton Island Race Week 2010 will be staged from August 21 to 28 and already has the brand new 58 m Alloy Yachts sailing yacht KOKOMO III likely to race in the new superyacht regatta.

‘The inclusion of the Superyacht Division means that Audi Hamilton Island Race Week will now cover the full spectrum of keelboat sailing, from the smallest cruising yachts to the largest superyachts,’ said Hamilton Island CEO, Glenn Bourke. ‘Nothing could be better, especially when you consider the venue.

‘We have wanted for some years to have superyachts join us, and now, with the new Hamilton Island Yacht Club, our luxury villas, and the stunning 18-hole Hamilton Island Golf Club fully operational, we really can cater for everyone. Our great regatta is going to be even greater.’

Hamilton Island is owned by Bob Oatley the owner of the supermaxi Wild Oats XI. The island is the largest tropical island destination in Australia and is the gateway to the beautiful Whitsunday Islands. With its own commercial jet airport Hamilton offers full facilities as well as the acclaimed qualia retreat.

Special superyacht racing courses, taking the fleet around the magnificent Whitsunday Islands, which lie immediately adjacent to Hamilton Island, will be used by the superyachts at Hamilton Race Week.

Already Lang Walker, the owner of the magnificent S/Y Kokomo, has declared his intention to be at the Hamilton Island Race Week and further entrants are pending. Also, during the 2009 Race Week, American superyacht owner Jim Clark said he was also considering entering a yacht for 2010 – either sailing yacht ATHENA, his massive traditional 88 meter gaff rigged schooner (one of the largest private luxury yachts anywhere in the world), or RANGER his J-Class sloop.

The new Kokomo III is finishing her rigging work and being readied for sea trials and owner handover in Auckland. Designed by Ed Dubois and built in New Zealand by Alloy Yachts Kokomo is now one of the largest and most impressive luxury sailing yachts in the world.
