The swath type yacht called SILVER CLOUD, which is an inovative catamaran with submersed torpedo potons, has won the 2009 World Superyacht Award for Technology.
Swath = Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull.
TECHNOLOGY AWARD
Abeking & Rasmussen – For their design of the world’s first SWATH yacht, Silver Cloud.
Judges’ Comments:
In deciding this award, the judges concentrated on the entries that relied on significant new technology that addressed real issues in the world of superyachts.
The judging committee congratulates all of the entrants, but it was particularly impressed by an owner’s dedication in securing a yacht whose design would minimise motion sickness, yet still fill all the other functions that he required, including a helipad with commercial clearance.
Creating a functional SWATH (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) design in which the yacht is effectively supported by two fully submerged torpedo-shaped hulls joined to the hull by four vertical struts, requires far greater technology, design effort and calculation than almost any other vessel but the pay-off is that the ship’s movement is reduced by about 1/5th compared to a conventional vessel of similar displacement.
After completing her first transatlantic crossing, Silver Cloud’s owner reported that he was ‘delighted with his yacht’s performance and plans to start a westbound circumnavigation in 2009′.
His mission has been achieved!
