The World Superyacht Awards 2010 organized at the Guildhall of London on 22nd May was in its fifth year this week. However, there were three yachts that made a prominent mark at the event – Feadship’s motor yacht Pegasus, Trumpy yacht Freedom and Necker Belle.

Motor yacht Pegasus had received the prestigious Best Refitted Yacht Award. The length of this displacement yacht was enhanced from 49.38m to 52.25m making it even more luxurious and spacious. Besides this, a massive expansion was done for all the three decks. This resulted in an increase in the hull length at waterline by four meters and the sundeck by approximately six meters.

Pegasus has also benefited from a ten month refit in 2009 conducted by Feadship’s in-house team along with De Voogt Naval Architects. As part of the renovation, a larger fold-down swim platform and a stunning saltwater pool on the sundeck were also included. M/Y Pegasus features a large main saloon and full beam bridge deck lounge. Moreover, the additional length of the yacht allows it to have generous space on the outside including four outdoor dining and lounging areas.

The 32m sailing yacht Necker Belle was honored with a Judges’ Special Commendation in the best refit category. This catamaran is part of the Virgin Limited Edition which comprises of various Richard Branson’s luxury properties. This covers Sir Richard Branson’s 74 acre Necker Island and the Necker Nymph ‘Underwater Aircraft’. Necker Belle was revamped at Azzura Shipyard, Australia and was transformed into a strong and structurally enhanced craft. In the words of the judges, Necker Belle was reborn with its latest refit.

Motor Yacht Freedom also won Judges’ Special Rebuild Award at the event. Mathis Yacht Building Company LLC had built this 104ft Trumpy yacht on 4th July, 1926. With a length of 31.7m, the yacht deserved the award because the entire refit work conducted was equivalent to a rebuild.

The interiors of Freedom have been designed by Elizabeth Mc Millen Designs and John Trumpy was responsible for naval architecture. Originally, the yacht was in an extremely bad condition when it was bought by McMillan Yachts. They being an expert in restoration and maintenance of classic yachts, rebuild the yacht. The fantail motor yacht was re-introduced by McMillan Yachts in 2009 after completing five years of repair work.

The panel of judges at the event believed that the renovation work of M/Y demanded tremendous efforts from the company. The repair work consisted of removing everything salvageable from the yacht and developing a new keel, frames and double planking. All this was possible only if the yacht was through with deciding upon the original items in a way that retained its charm and tradition while giving it a refreshing look with new amenities.
