Trafalgar Wharf, an inactive wharf since several years, has been recently taken over for establishing a refit and repair centre. This traditional yard of Vosper Thornycroft, on the UK’s South coast rose above its dormant status and under the new ownership is all set to reappear in the yacht industry. After facing ambiguity, the dock was taken over in the end of 2009 giving a boost to the local economy. It will cater to the maintenance needs of the shipyards long tradition of boatbuilding and engineering.

One of the intriguing projects at the location has been the refit work of the 1,000 tone lift at the shipyards. Initially, Senses was one amongst those vessels which used the lift at Trafalgar Wharf in January 2010 for renovation work. This yacht with a length of 59m was constructed by Schiffs-Und Bootswerf Fr Schweers (belonging to the Lurssen Group) in 1999. It can cover a distance of 4800 nautical miles at 14 knots and retain a top speed of 15 knots with the support of twin 2175Hp engines.

According to the Site’s Managing Director, Jonny Boys, projects like that of Trafalgar and Portsmouth can definitely benefit in strengthening the local economy. A host of maritime companies like chandlers, brokerages, RIB dealers, superyacht repairers, boat sign makers, outboard and inboard motor specialists, and marine stabilization system manufacturers function across the Solent waterfront. This waterfront formerly underwent a series of changes and had disused buildings but now houses a huge number of light and heavy marine industries. Besides churning out profits from the yard, the owners of Trafalgar Wharf have also invested in properties onsite with the assistance of the local council. This allows them to transform empty and dilapidated properties into affordable accommodation after renovation.

Jonny Boys further added that their performance highly surpassed their expectations. Post the successful start, they are also looking for new occupants for these housing projects and have their hands full with a series of high profile projects.
