Walcon Marine, a leader in the design, construction and installation of marinas and yacht harbours, has finished 2009 in a confident mood with a range of projects underway both across the UK and overseas.
While marina operators have understandably been cautious in their investment plans over the past twelve months, Walcon has seen a steady flow of business from maintenance activities and upgrades, as well as completing high profile projects including the 2012 Olympic marina at Portland (shown left). In particular, the company’s purpose‐built piling barge – the Walcon Wizard – has had a busy autumn down in the west of England, taking on assignments at a variety of locations including Plymouth’s Mayflower Marina, Darthaven Marina and Batson Creek in Salcombe, as well as for the Yacht Haven Group in relation to their new undercover dry stacking facility at Yacht Haven Quay, also in Plymouth. Overseas projects currently underway include the construction of a fuel pontoon for the Port Louis harbour development in Grenada, which is due to be shipped in the next few weeks, and Walcon is also delighted to have again won the contract to supply the temporary pontoons for the next Dubai International Boat Show.
“2009 saw a change in emphasis with an increase in demand for new pontoons and piles from smaller operators,” comments Clive Kemp, Walcon’s commercial director. “This reflected a move by some boat owners to look for cheaper, no frills berthing away from the ful ‐service marinas. However, 2010 has begun with a number of significant projects at the discussion stage which gives us confidence for the
year ahead.”
Founded in 1963, Walcon Marine is the market leader in the design, construction and installation of marinas, yacht harbours and berthing facilities around the world. As probably the longest established and most experienced company in its field, Walcon Marine is a global organisation with manufacturing facilities in the UK, Australia and Dubai. Its pontoons are now installed in over 30 different countries on five continents, and recent projects include the marina built at Portland on the south coast for England for the 2012 Olympics.
