The development work of the Christophe Harbor marina which is expected to become the most sought after in the Caribbean region has already been started from 18th January 2010. Situated on the southeastern peninsula of St. Kitts, it is a beautiful site with natural shelter of hills and bluffs, favorable winds, excellent proximity and access to the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. The shipyard will be located in the Great Salt Pond which is a 300-acre parcel. Apparently, it becomes the centerpiece of the 2,500-acre Christophe Harbor resort. Situated a little outside the Pond is the Whitehouse Bay considered to be one of the best anchorages in the Caribbean. During winters when the other anchorages and harbors can’t be used, the Christophe Harbor is the best solution due to its calm and comfortable water area.

The Chief Operating Officer at Christophe Harbor, LeGrand Elebash had stated that the marina would have excavation of the megayacht basin 20 feet deep in the 34 acre land also popular as the little salt pond. They are also set to create 42 additional harbor front property lots. Gradually, they would fill the site with excavated material for the lower golf holes. Finally he also stated that they plan to work on the beaches at Ballast Bay and Whitehouse Bay by using the sand.

With the new harbor ready, the company believes to give tough time to its competitors in the Caribbean land. The Christophe Harbor is expected to garner high interest from those in the yachting community besides offering the clients a chance of ownership of the yacht. The progress of the marina and that of Christophe Harbor is under the control of Christophe Harbor Development Company, Limited (CHDC). CHDC is an initiative headed by Kiawah Development Partners which is popular for its amazing development commitment towards protection and preservation of natural habitats. St. Kitts Marine Works, owned and managed by Kittitian Regiwell Francis will carry the activities of the harbor excavation project.

The shipyard will have the facilities of protected entrance and a safe inner harbor. The harbor will cover 300 slips with 50 to 60 slips, accommodating vessels 85 feet to 300 feet in length. The streamlined Customs and Immigration Services will be as part of the official port of entry. Clients are bound to get huge berthing area, exclusive commercial and technical benefits. The resort will also consist of a championship – 18-hole golf course, elegant residential locations, two branded five star hotels, beach clubs, restaurants, a private yacht club and shopping. Over and above this, the yard will also feature commercial activities in a beautiful marina village. It is expected to provide local jobs and opportunities for local entrepreneurs and service providers when megayacht owners, guests and crews gathered at the event.

An opulent yacht club which has a captain’s lounge and guest quarters, reservations at the island’s best restaurants, freshwater hookups, dockside facilities and concierge services consisting of security, laundry service and transportation will also be made available. Other in-slip services like fueling for hook-up boats with a length of more than 60 feet, repair and maintenance, factory amenities for yachts greater than 100 feet in length and waste-water are the services that would also be offered by the marina.

After completion of the project, the estimated cost of the marina project will be more than $100 million USD. The initial orders for the megaycht slips will be placed at the rate of $10,000 per linear foot. It will be 14-16 months for the first stage to get over. Thus by 2011 spring they will be able to deliver the yacht. By April 2010, the first 15 of the new harbor front property lots will also be finished. St. Kitts are also working on the designs for the first mega yacht docks but will get involved with it only when they fully complete the excavation project.
