Sailing yacht BRITANNIA has now been launched in Russia and will be ready to ‘rule the waves’ next season.

The original sailing yacht Britannia was a famous sailing cutter America’s Cup racing yacht and the last of the British royal racing yachts. She was owned by King George V and in keeping with his dying wish to ‘be buried with him’ she was sunk off the Isle of Wight after his death.

In 1892, Scottish designer George Lennox Watson was asked by King Edward VII to design a sailing yacht. Watson accordingly designed Royal Yacht Britannia as First Class cutter and she was built alongside his America’s Cup challenger Valkyrie II at the D&W Henderson Shipyard.

The modern classic yacht BRIANNIA is a newly launched replica superyacht of the famous sailing yacht – the royal cutter built for Edward Prince of Wales in 1893 and later raced by King George V. She has recently been launched in Archangel, Russia after the owner and man responsible for her creation, Sigurd Coates, eventually won possession of her.

He extracted her from the shipyard yacht builder up in northern Russia after the owner claimed the sailing yacht was to be retained. Maybe Britannia will be sailing soon in Europe and may even be seen cruising in the UK where the original BRITANNIA showed her wears.

Some background info on Yacht BRITANNIA:

The original launch of a replica of the G. L. Watson designed royal sailing yacht Britannia was been stopped by a dispute between the yacht’s Norwegian owner, Sigurd Coates, and the builder’s Moscow based share holders. The dispute centered on the value of the yacht where the Russian yard, near the northern Russian port of Arkhangel’sk, wanted the current value, rather than the commissioned one.

The difference between what was paid to build the yacht under contract and the current market value of Britannia “Could be between £2 and £3 million.”
